The tradition of having a summer picnic is strongly imbedded in our
warm weather loving culture. When someone calls for this kind of
get-together we respond, especially when there is strong community purpose.
The
German Canadian Business and Professional Association of Kitchener-Waterloo
invited to a summer bash to raise money for its educational fund, namely and
foremost the Bitzer Prize, which is awarded annually.
Paul
Tuerr had generously provided his farm for the occasion. Thus, on one of the
hottest days of the summer, a few dozen folks arrived on this charming
property just on the outskirts of the city for a bit of fun, food and
frolic. Even some Torontonians turned up from the sister organisation of TO.
Paul
Tuerr is an excellent and humorous host and took good care of his guests,
even gave guided tours through the house, which is hardly used, as he said.
The
comfortable spread houses some of his own creations next to some collected
art. Who knew that he paints?
Piller’s
Sausages and Delicatessen Ltd. of course had donated the fabulous meats and
sausages for the cause and CEO Wilhelm Huber was on hand with his trusted
crew to oversee the BBQ.
Fun & Friends
Many other community gurus were seen having fun with games
or just hanging out and talking to as many people as possible, including
Klaus Koeppen of the DKK and the Remembrance Society and DKK President elect
Dr. Ulrich Frisse, Dr. Margo Weigel and Dr. Manfred Richter, whose special
interests include the Bitzer Prize.
Games
The
lovely property was outfitted with shade creating marquees, tables and
benches. A lot of folks found a cooling spot under trees with their chairs
they brought along.
There
was live music and a lot of fun games to play, not just for kids but for
grown-ups too. The kids were the only ones frequenting the little lake in
pursuit of frogs and tadpoles.
All in all it was an entertaining way to raise funds for a
good cause while socializing with friends of the community. SFR.
