 November 2009 - Nr. 11

The Germania Club in Hamilton celebrated its 145th anniversary on October 17th. The club was founded as and by the Male Chorus Germania. In 1935 ladies were added to the Male Chorus and a mixed choir was formed, and that is the Germania Choir we mostly know today. The Choir sang the national anthems of Canada, Germany and Austria to open the event. As tradition we honoured those members who passed on during the year and the choir sang Abide with me, as an honour.

After introduction of the board members and their spouses, emcee and former President George Fischer called on the choir to perform selections for the anniversary, we then had a tasty rouladen dinner prepared by the club’s chef Jennifer.

After the dinner the Germania Club recognized members for their years of service starting at 10 years with a silver pin. Several members were honoured with a gold pin for 25 years of membership. Highlights of the anniversary night were recognition of 6 members who achieved 50 years of membership, these members received a certificate and a gold club pin with a diamond.

Ernst Friedel, President of the DKK Ontario honours Jackob Schnitzer as longest term memberSpecial recognition was given to our longest term member Jackob Schnitzer. Jack joined the Germania Club back in 1949, but told us that he actually was with the club already in 1947.

Ernst Friedel from the German Canadian Congress (DKK) attended the anniversary as a special guest to award Jackob the coveted Heritage Award from the DKK.

David Simon, President of the Germania ClubAt the end of the function President David Simon spoke of the founding of the club and its past. The present and the future depend on the members and their families. David suggested that if the club were to prosper in the future, the children of the present members would need to take interest in their heritage and culture.
